Every true film & television actor has an IMDb page. For those of you who don’t know, IMDb stands for Internet Movie Database. It’s the online hub where you can research information about film, television and actors. Nonetheless, there are aspects to IMDb that sometimes expat actors tend to overlook. The back-end to the website is very useful for working actors and I hope that I can bring awareness with today’s post.
Maximizing Your IMDb As An Expat Thespian
View Resume – Not every role you’ve had should be uploaded to the filmography section of your resume. However, the “view resume section” can be filled with all the work you’ve done, if you so choose. But what is most important are the sub-sections you can maximize such as training, theater, voice over & commercials. These sections can’t be seen from filmography but are strong additions when filled out in detail for your potential decision makers.
Other Works – If you can remember the dates of your theater performances I highly recommend that you add the information to this section. It’s the first sub-section under “Personal Details” and adding your strongest stage performances shows acting prowess. No matter how few the roles, being able to place a date beside your theater & character speaks volumes. The only catch, you can’t add anything without a date. So make sure when you do that musical you mark that calendar.
Publicity – True, this section is for those expat actors that have done interviews with the media. With that in mind, start thinking of ways to get yourself known. For example, call up that local magazine and see if there interested in doing an interview. Expat Thespians are still a new and interesting topic, use this fact as your foot-in-the-door. Details in this section are crucial such as; the name of the interviewer, title of the interview, name of the magazine, magazine volume number, issue & page number.
Official Sites – The “official sites section” is gold. Giving you just one more place on the internet to own online real-estate. At the least, there should be a website with your legal name as the domain name. At the most, you should have information about yourself on popular sites from your host country, a link to your blog, a guest post on a different website, online interview etc.
We shouldn’t promote our career with just one section of IMDb. The filmography section is just the tip of your iceberg and the tip of the your iceberg doesn’t define your giant size, true shape and potential…Expat Thespian!
There’s a fee to have your information on this page & there’s an IMDb Pro version which is only a few dollars more. Either way, a worthy investment.
