Flourishing Through Admiration As An Expat Thespian

We hear it all the time.  “OMG, you’re such a great actor!”  “Wow, that role you played was phenomenal!”  These words of admiration are great but can be graciously misleading. So, I want address how to retain your desire to push yourself. Today’s post?

Flourishing Through Admiration As An Expat Thespian

The Greats Never Stop – It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in this business, the great actors never stop training.  They never stop pushing themselves.  Unless you’re willing to come out of your comfort zone a little more with each role, you will plateau. I believe acting is evolving and we must evolve with it to survive. And I don’t only mean in the craft but also in the business of acting.  NEVER. STOP. TRAINING.

Ask For The Blunt Critique – I love being praised but I love a blunt critique even more.  Find an acting coach that you trust, perform a monologue, or section of a script, and listen to their evaluation.  The blunt, honest and hard critique is essential to the actor’s career. Why? Because failure is the main incredient to success and the only way to see our failures is to have someone tell us the God’s-honest- truth.

Remember It’s Subjective – Acting is art and art is always subjective. So one person’s praise could very well be another’s criticism.  Take all admirations with a grain of salt. Believe that you’ve done well and know that you can do better.  You’ll be more objective when you remember it’s all subjective.

Admirations will come and go but they aren’t fleeting because they’re your own. You’ve earned them.  But remember, they’re stepping stones to the greater actor in you…Expat Thespian!

I hope you enjoyed these tactics for actors working in a foreign country. Do you agree? Please reply in the comments below with your thoughts or questions on expat acting.
