Choosing A New Host Country As An Expat Thespian

Considering leaving your host country for another adventure? Your current location losing its luster?  Here are some tips to consider before taking the leap? Today’s post?

Choosing A New Host Country As An Expat Thespian

Language – How much time did you invest in your current host language? Was the language a challenge to learn? Are you willing to start all over with a new language? As expat thespians our “second tongue” becomes part of who we are. An expression of what we’ve become overseas. The time and money you’ve spent studying is a reflection of your dedication. Don’t disregard this when choosing your new country.

Homework – This may seem obvious but there are some specific things to consider.  First, how has the film industry of the new country grown? Second, how is it projected to grow?  A simple search online using words such as “film industry”, “growth” and “the name of your country” can help in your quest.  Pay close attention to the numbers because too drastic a rise could be an indicator that the country’s film industry will fall as quickly as it rose. In addition, just because the industry is making money doesn’t mean it’s a right fit for you.

Questions – Find other expat thespians in the country that you’re considering and ask many questions.  A quick search on social media will be able to assist in this area. (Keywords: “Foreign actors in _____) No one knows the landscape of a country’s film industry better than the expat actor.  Ask questions about immigration, visas, talent agents, casting directors, and even touchy subjects like racism & glass ceilings — if you believe in them. 🙂  The more questions you ask, the more informed a decision you can make.

Your choice to leave your host country is a great one.  We all left our native countries for greater opportunities in our craft. So, I commend you for wanting to spread your wings, just make sure that your sights are set on a true horizon…Expat Thespian!
