Recently I was listening to tips on building a better blog. One of the recommended strategies was to join a forum and propose a question. I quickly went to LinkedIn and I asked, “Are Expat Thespians The New Trend?”
A Canadian writer/editor was kind enough to respond with two questions although today I’m only focusing on one. He asked, “What makes the expat thespian different in his marketplace?”
The hardest part wasn’t answering the question but making sure my fingers typed as fast as I was thinking. I believe in what’s happening. The expat thespian is the new trend. So here are the reasons for
BEING MARKETABLE AS AN EXPAT THESPIAN
If a production is in need of a foreigner while shooting abroad they don’t have to look far. Of course, that’ll depend on the actor’s grasp of his craft, availability, money, etc. Nonetheless, it’s more cost effective to hire someone that’s already in country. It goes without saying that every production wants to be cost effective. Accessibility is not only geography but also that an expat thespian is ready with training, networking capability, industry know-how, and being business savvy. In addition, the accessible actor should be working on the must do’s to make it in this business.
I don’t see Hollywood as the only avenue. With the way things are going China will soon be called “Chinywood” and Korea, with its strategy for overseas markets, soon to be “Koreywood.” The paradigm has shifted and the “woods” are conglomerating worldwide, with Bollywood, Nollywood, and Y’allywood becoming film industry icons. The internet and social media has made it possible to be global and the expat thespian has a front row seat. Viewing Hollywood as an expat gives the international actor an open perspective. This alternative perspective can lead to great opportunities and greater marketability.
The expat thespian understands this area very well. In order to be taken seriously we have to take the giant leaps. We throw ideas against the wall and see if they stick. There’s little room for us to play it safe. There’s little time to play by the rules. The risks have to be measured, calculated, and structured. I don’t mean a gamble. I mean a risk. Addicts Gamble. People Who Count Cards Take Risk. Don’t gamble with your career. Take calculated risk, because fortune favors the bold. You heard it from Jim Carrey, “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”
