5 Tips For Creating Content As An Expat Thespian

I recently met with a writer to speak about creating a webseries.  It was an enjoyable meeting as the writer is a friend. However, I wanted to speak about creativity because at times I still find creating content burdensome. Today’s post?

5 Tips For Creating Content As An Expat Thespian

Create Content That Translates – Don’t just create content for your host country. Create content that can be enjoyed by your native country also. The point of taking on this task is to create an opportunity for yourself. But if you create an opportunity that only translates to one country then your ultimately limiting your possibilities.

Consider Your Overhead – The content you want to create is going to take money and time.  As the writer I met with told me “Things will get difficult.” With that in mind make sure you give yourself time to plan and plan and plan some more.  You have an entire community of people, ask for help, see who’s interested and make sure the project you want isn’t too much too soon.

Use Your Host Language – One of the ways expat actors can promote themselves is by acting in their host language.  Using your host language on a daily basis but not including it in your craft is a missed opportunity. Find ways to incorporarte the language, idioms, and even slang into your content.  This will reinforce the first the tip on creating content that translates.

Do Background Research – “If you haven’t done your homework then you’ll probably fail the test.” That’s what an old teacher used to say to me and the ananlogy works.  Make sure to do the research on your content because your project deserves the best. Your research can come from anywhere and great research starts with due diligence.

Create What You Like – I chose a webseries because I prefer the style of content. Find the style of content that you would enjoy the most, find the theme, the genre, and above all else find the love so you don’t have to work for it.  We all work hard for our craft but we don’t mind the work because this is what we love to do.

In today’s market of actors we have to create our own content so we can stand out from the crowd.  There’s no one like you in this business, so find your YOUnique…Expat Thespian!

I hope you enjoyed these tactics for actors working in a different country. Do you agree? Please reply in the comments below with your thoughts on expat acting.
