The hardest part of acting is the business. Many of us actors don't have a MBA and if we aren't careful we can let our "show business" fall into depression.
I've learned a tactic when trying to understand business. Don't let the terms scare you. Learn them. Understand them. Involve them and most importantly change them to something more relatable.
The acronym S.W.O.T. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) doesn't resonate with me as an expat thespian. So, I chose the acronym C.A.S.T. Now I'm connected. I'm ecstatic when I'm cast and banging my head against wall when I'm not.
So I thought it beneficial to show how we can use business strategies with an artistic twist. My question today is
What Is Your C.A.S.T. Analysis Expat Thespian?
A portion of my analysis to assist you.
CLOUT: I'm a networking hound. 95% of my IMDb credits have been because I developed a relationship with someone in the industry. Additionally, I'm a logistical hawk which is great for the business of acting.
After 5 years in Korea my Korean is at a low intermediate level. Sure I've been given Korean scripts and time to memorize the lines but with the growing industry that won't be enough. Steps to improve this must be taken.
SCOPE: I use my logistical skills to keep me informed. The growth of international film has opened up opportunities for expat thespians worldwide. I've connected with thespians in Europe and Asia which ignited the new opportunity, #THESEOULBROTHA PRESENTS.
THREATS: Busan International Film Festival 2016? There's been growing tension because Busan government interfered with the festival's artistic freedom. If this festival, the largest in Asia, doesn't happen imagine the repercussions.
Figure out your C.A.S.T. analysis and then create a measurable Action Plan. It's the difference in having a career as an expat thespian and just landing jobs as a foreign actor. We have to assess from all angles because acting isn't always ABC, most of the time it's ZGQ.
