Last week I had my first interview with an American talent management agency. Although I thought the interview went well, I did make a couple of mistakes that I would like to share so the same thing doesn't happen to you. I know what your thinking, "How kind of #TheSeoulBrotha!" (Cue Applause) Today's post?
How To Prepare For An Agency Interview As An Expat Thespian
Be Camera Ready - The company representative asked for a phone call, however, when I called, they then requested to Skype. This took me off guard because I wasn't "camera ready." It was 7 a.m. and I'd been up for an hour working on social media. No shower, no brushed hair, and thank God they couldn't smell my breath through the camera. So, no matter what, be "camera ready" which means to be at the level of appearance that you are most happy with when you're on camera. The representative will thank you. The gods of film will thank you.
Practice Your Introduction - There's that dreaded statement that is said by all agents and managers, "Tell me about yourself." I must admit, I froze. Mind you I have a script prepared for this statement, but when I was on the Skype call, I froze and even though I worked my way around it I don't think it was the best. So, before the call, practice thoroughly what your going to say. If you don't know what to say to that statement check out this link by Dallas Travers on how to respond.
Monologues Prepped - Always have a contemporary and classical monologue memorized. You're an actor and you should be able to do at least two monologues at the drop of a hat. Be sure to ask the representative which style of monologue they would like to hear. Try to choose a monologue that you enjoy and one that doesn't have an obscene amounts of profanity or erotic language. I chose a contemporary from a popular television series. Whew! One point for #TheSeoulBrotha!
Remember, no matter how prepared you think you are, something is going to come out of left field. Yet, having these three tips covered will provide a lifeline...Expat Thespian!
